What are the different types of drug metabolites?

Drug metabolites come in three main types:

1. Inactive metabolites: These are formed when the body breaks down a drug but don't have any therapeutic effects.
2. Active metabolites: They retain pharmacological activity and contribute to the drug's effects. They can further be categorized into:
   • Prodrugs: Initially inactive but are converted into active forms in the body.
   • Prolongers: Extend the duration of the drug's action.
   • Alterers: Have different mechanisms of action compared to the original drug.
   • Antagonists: Reduce or counteract the effects of the parent drug.

Toxic metabolites: Some metabolites can be harmful compared to the original drug.
