Difference between mouth ulcer and cancer

I’ve had a mouth ulcer that hasn’t healed for a while. How can I differentiate between a simple mouth ulcer and something more serious like oral cancer?

It’s important to know the difference between a regular mouth ulcer and something more serious like oral cancer. Here are some key things to look for:

Duration and Healing Time

  • Mouth Ulcers: Usually heal on their own within 1-2 weeks.
  • Oral Cancer: If a sore or ulcer lasts more than 4-6 weeks without getting better, it should be checked by a doctor.

Appearance and Characteristics

  • Mouth Ulcers:
    • Small, round or oval-shaped
    • White or yellow in the center with a red border
    • Clear edges and usually found inside the cheeks or lips
  • Oral Cancer Signs:
    • Can appear as white, red, or mixed-colored patches
    • Edges are often uneven or irregular
    • May look like rough patches or thick areas
    • Can appear anywhere in the mouth, including the tongue, gums, or roof of the mouth

Pain and Other Symptoms

  • Mouth Ulcers:
    • Usually painful, especially if irritated by food or drink
  • Oral Cancer:
    • Might not be painful at first, but pain can develop and get worse over time
    • Can cause numbness or tingling in the mouth

Warning Signs of Oral Cancer

If you notice any of these symptoms, they could be signs of oral cancer:

  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • Unexplained bleeding in the mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Changes in your voice
  • Lumps or thick areas in the mouth
  • Loose teeth

If you have a sore in your mouth that hasn’t healed after 2-4 weeks, or if you notice any of the warning signs listed above, it’s important to see a doctor or dentist. Catching oral cancer early makes it easier to treat and leads to better results.

Remember, while most mouth sores are harmless, it’s always best to be cautious and get checked if you’re not sure.
