IBS vs Colon Cancer

I’ve been dealing with IBS symptoms but worry they could be something more serious like colon cancer. How can I tell the difference between the two?

IBS and colon cancer can share similar symptoms, making it important to recognize their distinct characteristics to know when to seek medical advice.

Symptoms of IBS:

  • Abdominal pain: Typically on the lower left side, non-progressive.
  • Irregular bowel movements: May include diarrhea, constipation, or both.
  • Bloating: A feeling of fullness and gas buildup.
  • Mucus in stool: A common IBS symptom, not typically seen in colon cancer.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer:

  • Persistent abdominal pain: May worsen or change over time.
  • Rectal bleeding: Bright red or dark blood in stool.
  • Significant bowel changes: Prolonged diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool.
  • Unexplained weight loss: A major red flag.
  • Fatigue and weakness: General feelings of tiredness.

Key Differences:

  • Blood in stool: Common in colon cancer, not in IBS.
  • Weight loss: Unexplained weight loss is more suggestive of colon cancer.
  • Pain progression: IBS pain is usually stable, while colon cancer pain may worsen.

When to Seek Medical Attention: Consult a doctor if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening pain.
  • Blood in your stool.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Bowel changes lasting more than a few days.
  • Symptoms unresponsive to IBS treatments.

Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, are recommended for those over 45 or with risk factors, as early detection greatly improves colon cancer outcomes.
