I'm interested in the use of repurposed medications for cancer. What are some of the most effective ones currently being used?

Researchers have found that some drugs, originally created for other health issues, may also help treat cancer. Here are some examples:

  • Metformin: Originally used for diabetes, Metformin is being studied for its potential to fight different types of cancer.
  • Aspirin: Known as a pain reliever, Aspirin has shown it might help prevent colorectal cancer.
  • Statins: These drugs, which lower cholesterol, may also help in preventing or treating certain cancers.
  • Chloroquine: Originally for malaria, Chloroquine might make other cancer treatments work better.
  • Niclosamide: A drug used to treat parasites, Niclosamide has shown potential in fighting cancer in early studies.
  • Valproic Acid: Used for epilepsy, Valproic Acid is being looked at for treating some cancers, especially when combined with other therapies.
  • Thalidomide: Once a sedative, Thalidomide is now used to treat multiple myeloma, a type of cancer.
  • Propranolol: A beta-blocker for high blood pressure, Propranolol has shown effectiveness against certain cancers like angiosarcoma.
  • Disulfiram: Used to treat alcoholism, Disulfiram has shown some potential in early cancer studies.
  • Mebendazole: Originally for treating parasites, Mebendazole is being studied for treating brain tumors and other cancers.

These drugs have shown varying levels of effectiveness in cancer treatment, either on their own or combined with other cancer therapies. While some have shown promise in early studies, not all are fully approved for cancer treatment yet. Researchers continue to study their safety and effectiveness in treating cancer.
