What are the benefits of administering chemotherapy in a low dose?

I've heard about low dose chemotherapy as an alternative approach to cancer treatment. What are the benefits of administering chemotherapy in a low dose, and how does it compare to standard doses?

Compared to traditional high-dose chemotherapy, low-dose chemotherapy offers several notable advantages.

First and foremost, it significantly reduces the occurrence of severe side effects commonly associated with chemotherapy. By administering smaller doses of medication, low-dose chemotherapy minimizes risks such as mucositis, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and febrile neutropenia, making the treatment more manageable, particularly for older or frailer patients.

Additionally, low-dose chemotherapy exhibits antiangiogenic effects, meaning it can impede the growth of new blood vessels that sustain tumors. This action deprives cancerous cells of vital nutrients and oxygen, hindering their ability to grow and metastasize—an effect not typically observed with high-dose intermittent chemotherapy.

Another key advantage is the ability to administer low-dose chemotherapy continuously or at shorter intervals over an extended period, rather than in cycles with breaks. This continuous treatment approach helps prevent the re-establishment of blood vessels supplying the tumor during treatment pauses, potentially enhancing its efficacy.

However, the effectiveness of low-dose chemotherapy may vary depending on factors such as cancer type, stage, and the specific drugs utilized. Despite its promising outcomes, further research is required to establish low-dose chemotherapy as a widely accepted standard treatment approach.
