What are the different types of drug metabolites?

I'm learning about how the body processes medication and came across different types of drug metabolites. What are the different types of drug metabolites, and how do they affect the efficacy and breakdown of drugs in the body?

Drug metabolites come in three main types:

  1. Inactive metabolites: These are formed when the body breaks down a drug but don't have any therapeutic effects.
  2. Active metabolites: They retain pharmacological activity and contribute to the drug's effects. They can further be categorized into:
    • Prodrugs: Initially inactive but are converted into active forms in the body.
    • Prolongers: Extend the duration of the drug's action.
    • Alterers: Have different mechanisms of action compared to the original drug.
    • Antagonists: Reduce or counteract the effects of the parent drug.

Toxic metabolites: Some metabolites can be harmful compared to the original drug.
