What is metabolic therapy?

I've come across the term metabolic therapy in my research on cancer treatments. What is metabolic therapy, and how does it work to treat cancer or other health conditions?

Metabolic oncology, a burgeoning field in cancer treatment, delves into how cancer cells metabolize energy and nutrients differently than healthy cells. Researchers in this area seek to identify targets within these metabolic processes to develop treatments that specifically attack cancer cells while sparing healthy ones. Potential benefits include more specific treatment, slower tumor growth, improved effectiveness of standard treatments like chemotherapy, and overcoming drug resistance, all with potentially fewer side effects.

On the other hand, metabolic therapy, an alternative approach to cancer treatment, exploits cancer cells' unique metabolic characteristics. This includes strategies like ketogenic diets or fasting to starve cancer cells of glucose, elevating ketone body levels to disrupt cancer cell energy production, and targeting specific metabolic pathways.

While these therapies lack robust scientific evidence compared to standard treatments, they remain an active area of research, requiring close monitoring by oncologists for patients considering such treatments.
