The dosage for adults taking albendazole can vary based on a series of factors but according to a phase 1 clinical trial, the recommended dose is 1,200 mg twice daily (1,200 mg in the morning and 1,200 mg in the evening) for 14 days in a 21-day cycle, which is significantly higher than the 400 mg dosage used for albendazole’s original indications.
This dosage was determined to be the maximum tolerated dose with manageable side effects like myelosuppression, fatigue, and gastrointestinal upset. An earlier pilot study by Patel et al. used a lower dose of 10 mg/kg/day (divided into two doses) for 28 days in patients with advanced colorectal cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma.
While this dose stabilized or decreased tumor markers in some patients, it was not an optimized cancer treatment dose.
