What types of cancer are treated with low dose chemotherapy?

I'm researching different cancer treatment options and came across low dose chemotherapy. What types of cancer are treated with low dose chemotherapy, and how effective is it for these cancers?

Low-dose chemotherapy has been studied and used for treating various types of cancers, including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Brain cancers (glial cell tumors)
  • Kidney cancer
  • Neuroendocrine tumors
  • Sarcomas
  • Melanomas
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Multiple myeloma

Regarding effectiveness, the meta-analysis in result  provides some important insights:

  1. Overall effectiveness: The study found that low-dose chemotherapy achieved similar efficacy to conventional-dose chemotherapy in terms of overall response rate, overall survival, and progression-free survival.
  2. Reduced side effects: Low-dose chemotherapy resulted in significantly fewer severe adverse events compared to conventional-dose chemotherapy, particularly for mucositis, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and febrile neutropenia.
  3. Comparable outcomes: There were no statistically significant differences in treatment-related death, diarrhea, leucopenia, neutropenia, and nausea/vomiting between low-dose and conventional-dose chemotherapy.

However, it's important to note that while these results are promising, more research is needed.
