About IOZK
The IOZK – Immuno-Oncology Center Cologne is a translational medical facility (meaning it brings laboratory research directly to the patient’s bedside).
The clinic focuses on the development of individual, patient-specific therapies that aim to activate the body’s own immune system against tumor cells. By conducting research, manufacturing, and clinical application all under one roof, the clinic ensures that innovative immunotherapies are transferred safely from the laboratory into practical use.
The facility includes a GMP-certified (Good Manufacturing Practice) laboratory, which is a mandatory European standard for the production of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). This allows for strict quality control over the cultivation of a patient’s cells and the production of personalized vaccines on-site.
The Patient Journey: Step-by-Step
The treatment process at IOZK typically follows a structured sequence to ensure the personalized vaccine is manufactured and administered under optimal biological conditions.
Phase 1: Initial Assessment and Diagnostics
The journey begins with a comprehensive diagnostic phase. The clinic performs a specialized “Immune Status” analysis to determine the current activity of the patient’s T-cells and natural killer cells.
-
Duration: 1–2 days.
-
Goal: To establish a biological baseline and confirm immune response capability.
Phase 2: Priming the Immune System
Before the vaccine is administered, the clinic utilizes oncolytic virotherapy (Newcastle Disease Virus) and modulated electro-hyperthermia to target tumor cells. This process is designed to cause “stress” in the tumor, making it visible and vulnerable to the immune system.
Phase 3: Vaccination and Maintenance
Once the personalized IO-VAC® vaccine has been manufactured, it is administered to the patient.
-
The Vaccine: Contains the patient’s own “educated” dendritic cells.
-
The Response: These cells should travel to the lymph nodes to “program” the body’s T-cells to recognize and specifically target cancer cells throughout the body.
- Follow-up: Most protocols involve a series of vaccination cycles, usually spaced several weeks apart, depending on the patient’s specific clinical data.
Cologne as a Treatment Destination
The clinic is located in the center of Cologne, a major German medical hub.
-
Accessibility: The facility is approximately 20 minutes from the Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) and is easily accessible via the high-speed rail network (ICE).
-
Accommodations: There are several hotels within walking distance of the center, ranging from patient-friendly apartments to standard hotels.
-
Support: The clinic staff is accustomed to international patients and provides all medical documentation in English to ensure seamless communication with the patient’s home oncology team

Dr. Wilfried Stücker
Dr. Wilfried Stücker is the managing director of the IOZK and the IOZK Foundation.
In 1985, he initiated what is now known as the Immun-Onkologisches Zentrum Köln (IOZK).
In collaboration with various doctors and scientists, he developed IOZK immunotherapy and established the treatment center with its laboratories.
Dr. Stefan Van Gool, MD, PhD
Dr. Stefan Van Gool, MD, PhD, is a specialist in pediatric hematology-oncology with a focus on brain tumors.
His awards include the Schweißguth Prize (1995) and Nycomed Prize (1996) from the International Society of Pediatric Oncology, and the Cancer Research Prize from the Rik en Nel Wouters Foundation (1998, with Ludwig Van den Hove).
He coordinated the European expert group for high-grade glioma (2005–2009), has been a member of the Belgian High Health Council since 2008, and served as Co-Chair of the European Society for Pediatric Oncology’s Brain Tumor Working Group (2014–2017).
At IOZK, he is Medical Director, responsible for planning and implementing IOZK immunotherapy, and is a qualified person (GMP) in drug manufacturing.
