What Happens When Cancer Treatment Doesn’t Go as Planned?

When Mia Andrews was diagnosed with Stage 2 anal cancer, she did everything she was told to do, following the standard protocol of chemotherapy and radiation and adhering strictly to all of her doctors’ instructions.

Like many patients, Mia felt reassured by the numbers she was hearing – in particular, the 90% chance of survival she was given, and trusted that her treatment protocol would carry her through.

But when she got her follow-up results, and they suggested that her tumor had not fully responded to treatment, the certainty began to give way to fear and confusion. And suddenly Mia found herself faced with a new set of decisions no one had prepared her for.

“I remember asking my doctor what happens next,” Mia recalled, “And the answer they gave me was: ‘We hope for the best.”

That wasn’t enough for Mia. And it isn’t enough for so many patients who suddenly find themselves somewhere between conventional protocols and unanswered questions about what else might be possible.

When Standard Treatment Isn’t the End of the Story

Standard cancer treatments are built around well-established protocols, based on long-term statistics.

But no treatment comes with a 100% success rate.

There will always be patients who fall outside the expected outcomes, patients like Mia.

Mia approached her diagnosis the way she approached everything in her life: with discipline, optimism, and a plan.

She followed every instruction, maintained a rigorous routine, and trusted both her medical team and the process. That structure provided a sense of stability, and the belief that the outcome would be just as predictable.

When her symptoms persisted and her scans failed to provide clear answers, Mia knew something wasn’t right.

Eventually, that intuition was confirmed: the tumor had not been fully eliminated, and her prognosis had changed significantly.

Searching for Options Beyond “Wait and See”

Faced with limited options and the possibility of life-altering surgery, Mia reached a turning point. Instead of accepting the “wait and see,” attitude her doctors seem to have, she began exploring alternatives.

That search led her to a treatment approach outside her home country, one that aligned more closely with her sense of urgency and her need to take a proactive approach. Within days of connecting with Dr. Aigner of Medias Klinikum, a specialist integrative cancer clinic in Germany, she made the decision to move forward.

As she describes it, the shift was immediate: from feeling like she was “sinking” to a renewed sense of clarity and direction.

At the clinic, Mia received a form of regional  chemotherapy that is exclusive to Medias Klinikum. Instead of circulating throughout the entire body, the therapy was delivered directly to Mia’s tumor site in a highly concentrated dose, then filtered out of the bloodstream afterward.

After beginning the process, Mia’s entire trajectory changed. By her second treatment, there was no evidence of cancer

One year later, she remains cancer-free. The outcome also left her original medical team in unfamiliar territory, forcing them to reconsider assumptions and adapt to a result they had not anticipated.

Why Some Patients Look Beyond Their Local System

Mia’s story highlights some of the reasons patients, facing complex diagnoses, begin to look beyond their local medical system: when standard options feel exhausted, when outcomes don’t match expectations, or when urgency outweighs the comfort of waiting.

These decisions are rarely simple, requiring patients and their loved ones to weigh medical realities alongside logistical, financial, and emotional considerations.

Timing is also a critical factor, as it was in Mia’s journey.

After radiation, certain treatment options can become less effective over time, making speed not just important but essential.

It is what pushed her to go from passive patient to active decision-maker, moving quickly, asking questions, and advocating for herself at every stage.
