DMSO intravenous (IV) treatments can have several potentially serious side effects that you should be aware of before undergoing this procedure:

  • Red Blood Cell Hemolysis (Rupturing): IV DMSO can cause red blood cells to break down, which is particularly concerning for individuals with blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia or G6PD deficiency. The risk of hemolysis increases with higher doses of DMSO.
  • Allergic Reactions: DMSO may trigger histamine release, leading to allergic reactions such as flushing, difficulty breathing, abdominal cramps, and cardiovascular issues like low blood pressure. Severe allergic reactions are also possible.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea have been reported, likely due to the irritating effects of DMSO on the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Garlic-Like Taste and Breath Odor: A very common side effect of IV DMSO is a garlic-like taste and breath odor, caused by its metabolites.
  • Kidney and Liver Toxicity: High doses of IV DMSO may potentially damage the kidneys and liver. It is recommended to monitor kidney and liver function, especially with repeated treatments.
  • Neurological Effects: Headache, sedation, dizziness, and vision disturbances have been reported with IV DMSO use.

It is crucial to have IV DMSO administered under proper medical supervision, as dosing and purity significantly influence side effects. Using impure industrial-grade DMSO intravenously can be particularly hazardous. While DMSO IVs are used clinically, there are significant potential risks that need to be carefully considered and monitored.
