Hi, I learned that apricot seeds have amygdalin in them, and I wondered if it would be safe to swallow the seed whole?
Apricot kernels contain significant amounts of amygdalin – a substance that becomes toxic after being consumed because the amygdalin breaks down to release a poisonous chemical called cyanide which can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and in extreme cases, even death.
However, apricot kernels are safe to consume when they are processed properly to remove harmful substances, such as by soaking, boiling, or de-skinning.
Amygdalin is also available in tablet and IV form.
