Yes, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is alkaline. It has a pH level around 8.4, which is on the alkaline side of the pH scale.  When dissolved in water, baking soda ionizes into sodium and bicarbonate ions, giving the solution an alkaline pH. The alkaline nature of baking soda is what allows it to be used in baking as a leavening agent. When baking soda is combined with an acidic ingredient like yogurt, buttermilk, or lemon juice, it undergoes an acid-base reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas, causing baked goods to rise. The alkalinity of baking soda also makes it useful as an antacid to neutralize excess stomach acid. Some research suggests that baking soda might be an effective complementary treatment for people who have cancer, It's important to note that any attempts to alter body pH should only be done under medical supervision, as it can be dangerous.
