I've heard that DMSO might have some effects on cancer. Can you explain what it does to cancer cells or if it has any potential as a treatment?
DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has multiple effects on cancer cells. It slows down their growth, movement, and ability to form colonies by activating a gene called HLJ1, which helps to suppress tumors and stop cancer from spreading (2012).
DMSO also makes cancer cells more sensitive to treatments like UV radiation and chemotherapy, by increasing the number of cancer cells that die through a process called apoptosis.
Additionally, DMSO encourages immature cancer cells to mature, which can make them less aggressive and resistant to drugs.
