Is CBD Oil Useful for Treating Lung Cancer?

There is no definitive yes when it comes to CBD oil treating lung cancer, but experts have found some promising evidence over the past few years. Cannabinoids interact with the body’s internal endocannabinoid system that regulates appetite, nerve function, metabolism, emotions, pain, immune response, inflammation, and sleep. CBD is very popular among cancer patients for supportive care to treat pain and chemotherapy-related side effects like fatigue, anxiety, depression, vomiting, and nausea.

A recent study published by the National Library of Medicine suggests that CBD oil can act directly or indirectly on tumor cells. It was also reported that CBD oil could induce apoptosis in cancer cells via the production of reactive oxygen species, caspase activation, and activation of p53-dependent apoptotic pathways in cancer cells. This essentially means that CBD oil causes programmed cell death in cancer cells.

The National Cancer Institute stated that CBD oil might help to enhance the uptake or increase the effectiveness of certain drugs that doctors may use to treat cancer. A 2019 review indicated that several studies found that CBD extracts could help prevent cancer cells from multiplying and reduce cancer cell viability.

There are many success stories of people who chose not to do traditional therapy and rather treated their cancer with alternative remedies like CBD oil.

Best CBD Oil for Treating Lung Cancer

There are several
types of cannabis oils for treating cancer, with CBD oil known as the main one for medicinal treatment. CBD oil is valued for its health benefits, and there are three main types to consider:

1. Broad-spectrum CBD oil

2. Full-spectrum CBD oil

3. CBD oil derived from CBD isolate

When choosing a cannabis oil to treat lung cancer based on health and safety, it is recommended to choose one that emphasizes CBD. Broad-spectrum CBD oil has no THC levels, whereas full-spectrum CBD oil has trace amounts of THC present but not more than 3%. Oil made from CBD isolate involves the process of extracting all the compounds of a cannabis plant which produces pure CBD in a crystal form that can be ground into powder, making it more convenient for consumption but less effective than full-spectrum and broad-spectrum due to something called the entourage effect.

The entourage effect is well known with regards to cannabis. It is the phenomenon where various compounds interact with each other to enhance the effect of one another. When you take CBD and THC together, CBD reduces the psychotic potential of THC by blocking the sites of the CB1 receptors that THC tries to bind with, while the other cannabinoids may enhance the beneficial effect of CBD.

How to Use CBD Oil for Lung Cancer

1. Ingesting CBD Ingesting CBD oil means it passes through the digestive system and is metabolized by the liver, meaning that your body can absorb it over a few hours. Ingestible CBD oil products include capsules, edible foods, and drops that can be taken straight or added to food or tea—learn more about this in Best Foods to Eat and Avoid With Breast Cancer.

2. Topical CBD Topical CBD can be used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Topical products allow you to apply them wherever it’s needed the most and includes creams, salves, lubricants, bath salts, suppositories, patches, lip balms, and shampoos.

3. Sublingual CBD The sublingual method involves placing a few drops of CBD oil under the tongue and holding it there for up to a minute. This allows the important compounds to be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and dispersed throughout the body.

4. Inhaled CBD By inhaling CBD, the important compounds enter the bloodstream through the lungs and skip the digestive system completely. Vaping has become a popular way to inhale CBD. When inhaling CBD for lung cancer, it is essential to consult with your doctor first.

Side Effects of CBD Oil

Although CBD oil is generally well-tolerated, it can cause mild side effects including:

  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in appetite
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety

CBD may also interact with blood-thinning medication. Another concern is the unreliability of the dosage and purity of CBD products, so it is important to purchase your CBD oil from a reputable supplier.
