Fenbendazole, or fenben, is part of a class of antiparasitic drugs called benzimidazoles.  It was originally developed for, and is primarily used as, a deworming medication for animals. 

Reviews of benzimidazole drugs in general have described possible anticancer activity in laboratory and animal studies. Mebendazole, for example, has been used in humans for certain parasitic infections and has been studied more extensively in cancer research than fenbendazole.

But the repurposing conversation has now been expanded to include fenbendazole thanks to a proliferation of online protocols, anecdotal success stories, and preclinical research suggesting that it may affect cancer cell behavior.

How Fenbendazole Might Affect Cancer Cells

Several studies have explored how fenbendazole may act on cancer cells. One key mechanistic paper, published in 2018, found that fenbendazole acted as a “moderate microtubule-destabilizing agent” that “causes cancer cell death by modulating multiple cellular pathways.” 

In simpler terms, the drug appeared to interfere with the internal structures cancer cells need to divide and grow, while also affecting how they use energy and respond to stress. 

A 2022 study of 5-fluorouracil-resistant colorectal cancer cells suggested that fenbendazole could inhibit cancer cell growth and promote cell death, adding to interest in its potential as a repurposed cancer-related compound. This is important because drug resistance is one of the major reasons researchers look at repurposed medications in the first place. 

A 2024 review in Anticancer Research pulled together the broader fenbendazole literature, most of which relies on experimental models, case reports, or animal data rather than human clinical trials. Nevertheless, these studies suggest possible effects on:

  • Microtubule function — the cell’s internal scaffolding
  • Glucose uptake — how cells take in sugar for energy
  • Cancer cell metabolism — how cancer cells make and use energy
  • p53-related pathways — the cell’s damage-control system
  • Cancer cell death mechanisms — the process that tells damaged cells to die

Fenbendazole for Melanoma & Skin Cancer: What the Clinical Trials Show 

When it comes to using fenbendazole to treat skin cancer specifically, the most relevant evidence comes from melanoma-related studies in canine cells, not human patients.

In a 2022 study, researchers tested fenbendazole in five canine melanoma cell lines and found that it showed anticancer effects in vitro, including interference with the cancer cells’ normal cycle of growth and division. 

A similar 2025 veterinary study explored fenbendazole in combination with abemaciclib, a targeted cancer drug that blocks proteins cancer cells use to grow and divide. In that study, the combination appeared to have stronger effects in canine melanoma cells than either approach alone. 

This research is promising enough to justify further study, but it is still early-stage. In other words, the findings generate useful hypotheses; they do not prove that fenbendazole can treat skin cancer in humans.

Is Fenbendazole Safe for Skin Cancer Patients?

Because fenbendazole is a veterinary medication, it is not approved for human use and human safety data remains limited.

The good news? 

Related drugs in the same benzimidazole family, including mebendazole and albendazole, have been used for years in humans to treat parasitic infections and generally have well-established safety profiles. And fenbendazole itself has been reported to have a broad safety margin in animal studies. 

The not-necessarily-bad-but certainly-should-be-approached-with-caution-news? None of this automatically guarantees it is safe or appropriate for human cancer use.

Primary concerns include:

  • Human dosing is not standardized.
  • Product quality may vary.
  • Liver effects and drug interactions are possible
  • It may interact with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or supplements.

Jim Mulcahy was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma that had spread to multiple areas, including his brain, lymph nodes, right lung, adrenal gland, and hip. What About Other Antiparasitics for Skin Cancer?

Fenbendazole is not the only antiparasitic drug that has shown possible anticancer activity in early research. Two other names that often come up are mebendazole and ivermectin.

Mebendazole and Skin Cancer

Mebendazole is an antiparasitic medication that is used in humans to treat certain worm infections. It belongs to the same benzimidazole drug family as fenbendazole, which is why researchers often discuss these drugs together. 

A key difference is that mebendazole is approved for human use, while fenbendazole is primarily a veterinary drug.

Reviews have described mebendazole as a repurposing candidate in oncology because it may affect cancer cell division, microtubules, and cell-death pathways.

For skin cancer, the most relevant research is in melanoma cells. A 2008 study found that mebendazole inhibited growth and induced apoptosis, programmed cell death, in chemoresistant melanoma cells, partly through effects on Bcl-2, a protein that helps cancer cells avoid dying.

Ivermectin and Skin Cancer

Ivermectin is also an antiparasitic medication, though not part of the benzimidazole family. It belongs to a different class of drugs called macrocyclic lactones and works differently from fenbendazole or mebendazole.

Ivermectin gained notoriety in the general public during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it became the subject of intense public debate and widespread off-label use. More recently, it has also attracted attention in cancer-repurposing conversations.

Previous laboratory research has suggested that ivermectin may have anticancer effects because it can promote cell death and inhibit tumor-cell growth in experimental models. 

Recent reporting notes that the National Cancer Institute has begun preclinical research into ivermectin’s possible ability to kill cancer cells.

In terms of skin cancer specifically, some melanoma-related studies have looked at ivermectin in experimental models. One 2022 study found that ivermectin appeared to interfere with a process that may help melanoma spread, reducing metastasis in an experimental model. However, this was early lab and animal research, not proof that ivermectin works in human patients.
